FERNANDO Torres says Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard backed him over his decision to leave the Anfield club for Chelsea.
Gerrard was the on the verge of making the same move in the summer of 2005 after lifting the Champions League trophy with the Reds.
And Torres says that his former team-mate has supported him from the moment Chelsea registered their interest in signing him, just 10 days before the close of the transfer window.
"He [Gerrard] was one of the first ones who called me and supported me and was hoping the best for me if anything happened," said the new Chelsea number nine.
"Maybe he was was helping me and supporting me because he was in that situation himself, I don't know. But he has been a very good friend and team-mate from the first day until the last one."
When asked if Gerrard had pleaded with him to stay at Anfield, Torres replied: "No, he only wanted the best for me so he made me make the decision and he told me he would be with me and it didn't matter what decision I made."
But Gerrard's stance differed with that of his employers as the Blues' new striker revealed the Liverpool board had asked him to change his mind.
Torres added: "They didn't want me to leave, they tried to ask me to stay but I told them my decision was taken and I was never going to change my mind.
"When you get the chance to join a team that can achieve the Champions League and win the Premier League and you are in the right age to do that you can't say no."
