FRANK LAMPARD says he will go into today's FA Cup Final fired up by the prospect of making history for his club.
The Chelsea midfielder believes an FA Cup-Champions League double would make it the greatest season ever for him at the club – at least on a par with the ground-breaking first Premier League title of 2005.
“This could possibly be the best ever year at Chelsea for me,” Lampard said. “I hope to be able to tell you in a couple of weeks. But it would be right up there.
“The first league that we won here was amazing and if anything beats that, then it must be truly special because it was amazing, but we're on the brink of something that could definitely rival it, if not beat it.
“I think about it [the chance to make history] every night. I've never been more aware of what a situation like this means tomorrow and in two weeks.
“The cup final is a game you're always going to win. It's a massive game against a big team and then that Champions League is something we've always wanted and I'm actually desperate to win it, I make no bones about that and I'm very aware of both fronts.”
The midfielder, mindful that Liverpool fans are fond of mocking Chelsea's history, knows a victory would be a perfect riposte, but says he does not mind the chants.
“Liverpool should be very happy with their history and proud of it and Chelsea should be of their own as well. We've all got different histories and we're trying to create history this season.
“It's just fans' banter. They deserve to be able to crow about theirs, but Chelsea fans should walk tall and with pride – not just recently but over decades and decades at this level.
“I know I've been fortunate to be part of some big moments at this club – they've been the best moments of my career by a long way – and I'll give everything to try and be part of a winning team again, for sure.”
