Belgian refugees procession has historians puzzled

belgian refugees

THE purpose of this procession by young female Belgian refugees is not known but, as the banners are of a religious nature, they may be celebrating a saint's day, perhaps that of St Thomas of Canterbury on July 3.

The photograph was taken in Fulham Road, near the junction with Parsons Green Lane, in July 1918.

Unfortunately, the event was not covered in the local newspapers.
