Money really can buy you love - £100k register office opens
Jan 13 2010
THIS photograph was taken in September 1974 in London’s first selfcontained, purpose-built register office in Hammersmith – located in Nigel Playfair Avenue – after the marriage of Jasmine Johnson and Wilfred Barry.
The bride came from Shepherd’s Bush and her groom from the Virgin Islands, where the couple planned to make their home.
The new office cost about £100,000 to build and was designed by the Borough Architect, R A Mitchelmore.
The building was planned to give a ‘sense of importance of occasion rather than the feeling of being part of a production line’.
