Labour MP for Hammersmith, Andy Slaughter, provides our first political column of the year.
Vigils by candlelight were held outside Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals last Sunday and will continue every Sunday between 5pm and 6pm.
They brought back memories of 20 years ago – the last time the Tories tried to close Charing Cross. Please come along – candles are provided or bring your own.
Hammersmith & Fulham Save Our Hospitals has a lot of other events planned, in cooperation with other NHS campaigns in London, in the run-up to the decision on closure on February 19 and beyond. Visit their website www.saveourhospitals.net.
The sham consultation (which ignored the 70,000 votes against closure) leaves us in no doubt that the local soon-to-be privatised NHS will rubberstamp the closures of all four A&Es in west London.
But the real decision will be taken after that by the Secretary of State for Health. So our next target is the government.
Following the death of much-loved Wormholt & White City Councillor Jean Campbell, Labour has selected local campaigner Max Schmid as its candidate for the February 7 by-election.
He will be standing on a Save Our Hospitals platform – to keep Charing Cross and Hammersmith A&E open and oppose the downgrading of the new White City Health Centre.
